Michael Harrison: Love in the Shadows

30 August - 19 October 2003

Michael Harrison's images are intimate, inventive, romantic, playful and often slightly uneasy. Favouring singular, iconic images - of women, couples, faces, cats - painted in often pale washes and fragile lines, his work is evocative and meticulously skilful. He sources his symbolism from Tarot cards, art history, mass media, World War II photojournalism and life itself.

Although Michael Harrison has exhibited in many important group exhibitions and is represented in both New Zealand and Australia, Love in the Shadows is his first public gallery show. The exhibition surveys his work to date and features 45 rarely seen works, introducing wide audiences to his strange, lyrical world.
