SYMBOLS AROUND US
City-to-Sea Bridge
The whole bridge evokes stories about the creation of Whanganui–ā–Tara (Wellington harbour) and Māui with many of the figures on the bridge relating to Māori stories about the sea, arrival and navigation.
Primary: Find out what the symbols represent, who Ngake and Whataitai are and discover the wonderful histories and stories of Whanganui–ā–Tara. In our gallery classroom your students can create their own collaborative artwork.
Secondary: Analyse the sculptural works of Para Matchitt, consider the social and historical context of the work and record compositional elements. (Weather permitting classes will work outside on the bridge. Under wet conditions, classes will either work with images of the bridge in the gallery classroom or an alternative date can be arranged).
Please ensure your students safety in the sun - make sure they bring hats and are wearing sunscreen.
