Parihaka: The Art of Passive Resistance
Parihaka: The Art of Passive Resistance explores the impact and legacy of one of the major events in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand: the invasion of Parihaka Pa, Taranaki, by the Crown in 1881. This ground-breaking publication brings together art, poetry and waiata from the past one hundred years, during which time Parihaka has inspired the painters Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere and Tony Fomison, writers James K. Baxter, Harry Dansey and many others.
The publication features over one hundred artworks shown in the exhibition; colour reproductions of the commissioned works; a rich array of historical and contemporary photographs; commissioned essays on the history, art, literature and contemporary significance of Parihaka by New Zealand's foremost historians and art historians, including Dr Hazel Riseborough, Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Professor Paul Morris, Ruakere Hond, James Mack, Te Huirangi Waikerepuru and Te Miringa Hohaia, plus poetry specially commissioned for the exhibition by leading writers including J.C.Sturm, Ian Wedde, Elizabeth Smither and Alistair Te Ariki Campbell.
Co-published by City Gallery Wellington and Victoria University Press.
